Some time ago, I read and watched about Craig Venter and his team and their quest to create synthetic life.
Now they made it! Synthetic Life is here - Not everyday a human quantum leap achievement takes place.

It’s a truly amazing world we are living in… last two days I spent on a conference on Social Media where the connected infrastructure that is exploding today will profoundly change on how companies work and are being managed - but it will not only stop with companies and organizations - I think it will have much bigger impact than that on our human society as well, but more on that in another post. At some level the whole social media hype seems like a light ripple on the ocean compared to the milestone of taking the first step in creating synthetic life.

Craig Venter in his video below quotes the great Richard Feynman, who say’s What I cannot create, I do not understand. Sure it’s some major ethical issues around such a achievement that the Venter team did. But hey did man just now took the first step in truly acting as God?!

Flera intressanta talare fyllde första dagen;

Time for Lunch

Facebook med bilden Circle of friends.

There is a lot moving in this area now… wanted to write this post long ago but there it is as a Beta Post, I will continuously up-date this post as I’m getting more and more resources around this.

Here in Sweden we have web-based SaaS players like Fortnox,
24SevenOffice, E-conomic, Specter among others… A good list of the SaaS actors, you can find here Who is the winner in Saas Accounting.

I’m still amazed though that not so many accounting companies has started to really change and shift how their work is being done based on these new web-based systems. Instead a lot of these old accounting companies is still doing their work as they always have done it! The old paper way and is not providing their clients with proactive advice and systems.

Yesterday I stumbled up-on some interesting services for SME in the areas of agreements and accounting. First a brilliant application for signing agreements on-line. RightSignature, who provides digital signatures between parties on-line, no more printing and sending documents back and forth.

ExpenseBay, is one of several brilliant companies (see other alternatives further down) that makes receipts handling easy, Iphone app. to take photos of your expenses, send it of to ExpenseBay who then matches it with your credit card bill.

I’m wondering how many accounting companies in Sweden who is pro-actively suggesting this service to their customers, think a few if any, since it will drive their business volume down e.g. less work for the traditional accounting firm!

Watch how it works, example from ExpenseBay. But go to the companies webpage that I’ve listed below to get more information on how each of them are doing this:

I got a great comment from the Founder of Expensify. David Barret, see comment below, that I should add Expensify to the list of no-more-paper hassle when submitting recipes and reports, they have integrated with ERP vendors as well. Thanks for the comment David, sorry for missing your company in the list.

I’m now going to see what local initiatives we have here in Europe / Sweden if any… will post and up-date this
blog with this information over the next couple of days.

Another player that does exactly what ExpenseBay and Expensify does is Shoeboxed. And another one is Webexpenses.

Interesting here is that ExpenseBay and Expensify has partnered with Freshbooks, to get these expenses of your directly in to your invoices to your customers and then of course directly integration to your ERP-system like Netsuite, for accounting and bookkeeping, or Quickbooks (Expensify) All this is happening at a rapid speed, small intelligent systems that works with open API’s with each other, creating intelligent work-flow and minimizing the manual work.

A small SaaS company that caught my attention is XERO, that does a small accounting software based out-of New Zealand and their partner list of third party applications. Freshbooks also provides quite an impressive list of integration partners Freshbooks add-ons.

One thing is for sure - the accountants are up for some new ways of work and need to sooner or later make a major shift and change in how they work and how they are billing the end customers. And the makers of SaaS web based software will soon hit the time of shaking out the winners from loosers, since all of them need economy of scale to survive (e.g. a lot of users).

When time is of essence and what you spend it on then use the neat application by SlifeLabs, that keeps track on what you spend your time on from websites to documents etc.

What is your view on this? Please comment!

My summer reading among other books has been; If They Give You Lined Paper - Write Sidways by Daniel Quinn and Fångad av Hakkorset* by Bruno Manz. *A Mind in Prison The Memoir of a Son and Soldier of the Third Reich.

Daniel teaches the reader in his book, the methods behind is own thought process and ultimately empowering the reader to view the world of themselves in new revolutionary ways. A big theme for Daniel is: “In the next two or three decades; the people of our culture will learn to live sustainably - or not. Either way, it will be extraordinary.” Bruno on the other hand share his experience in growing up and participating in the Third Reich and reflects on how it became to be that he was a blind follower of the Third Reich.

Now after reading these books, I spent some time, the other day, laying on the beach watching a bird, skillfully hovering over the surface and swiftly and fast changing from hovering mode to dive mode where it plunged into the sea, trying to catch a fish. Now of course the bird wasn’t successful every time, I watched the bird do this repeated hovering and dive mode 15-20 times before catching a fish. As Daniel would have put it “a lucky moment for the bird and not so lucky moment for that fish that got caught”.

Now however reflecting on us humans, how do we do fishing? Well once up-on a time we did just what the bird did, we went out and fished and sometimes we got lucky and sometimes not. Now what would happen if we equipped the bird with scanner, radar, depth readers etc. Then the bird would be lucky 10 times out of 10. On the other hand then if the bird by it self didn’t maintain a balance of how much fish it caught, why would it? It would fish and eat all it could, I think, Now isn’t humans now doing the same? We have equipped our fishing fleet with all the technology to ensure that it can vacuum-clean the oceans for fish.

My scary insight is now that if we are doing this aren’t we at the same time doing a mass-murder on animals/species, hey who cares! Do you know a fish? Do you know for sure that there is fish left so it can reproduce? Have you ever sat down and reflect on the fish like a worthy spices with as much right as you have to live and populate this world? (don’t take me wrong I’m not a vegetarian just as little as the bird is).

Much like the mass murders that was committed of the Third Reich on other humans, and while most people will argue it’s not the same, I want to use this analogy to give the insight that Bruno gave me in his book about his own reflections in participating in the world of the Third Reich. The question that started ringing in my head is;

“What if we humans are now having A Mind in Prison by Consumer Capitalism, driven by more, more more?”

And when we wake-up like Bruno did after the WWII ended and found out a different truths and perspectives, what will we then think and write about it. Will there be books or texts published by people that participated in the Consumer Capitalism World. Exterminating in a very processed and industrialized way other species and being very regretful and resentful about it!

Maybe we should learn from the Bird and say we take 1 out of 10 not because it’s easy but because we can.
